[BIOGRAPHY]

To understand the motivation behind my current art practice it is important to understand a bit about my history. I was born in Hong Kong, and shortly after a British couple adopted me, moving to the UK in 1998. I was fostered for the first year of my life, they were also by a British family. My birthmother was a Vietnamese refugee boat person that fled to Hong Kong after the Vietnam War. I am now living and working as an artist Manchester, UK.

Through my art practice I have chosen to explore the experiences of being adopted, with a particular emphasis on transracial adoptions. I have produced a number of works based upon these themes, and this is something that I will continue to develop over the foreseeable future. Though the focus of my work is drawn from my own experiences of being adopted I feel my work also touches upon a variety of issues including family, race, multiculturalism, colonialism and origin where I am interested in challenging people perspectives.

I describe myself as an artist whose works mainly in digital mediums and installations. Although photography, film and video are predominant in my work I like to experiment and employ various materials to suit new ideas and projects.

Before this project I have rarely thought about my foster family, for they were always seemed like such a small art in my adoption story. However as time goes on I have become increasingly curious about them, for I know as much about them as I do my birthmother. My foster family gave me 3 things, my first and middle name, Jessica Jane, a set of photos of me at different ages and a white handmade sock bunny. On this page you can see the bunny and some of the photos they took of me. They are not in any of the photos, only maybe an arm or and objects in their house.

My (adopted) parents told me a few years after I moved to Manchester, UK that they have a vague memory that my foster family said they where moving to here.
